SPRING CLEANSE:  7 Day Detox Protocol

It’s time for a Spring Cleanse!  Spring is around the corner and you may be thinking of spring cleaning your home.  Why not spring clean YOU! One of the best methods of spring cleaning is to focus on supporting the detoxifying systems in your body. Some people might complete a monthly detox or maybe a 3-4 day cleanse, while others may do an extensive detox protocol that could last a couple of months. Read this article and learn more about our Spring Cleanse – 7 Day Detox Protocol

You may wonder what exactly do we need to detox from and how does that affect our overall health?  In these modern times toxins are all around us, from personal care products, pollution, cleaning supplies, to even some of the foods we eat. On a daily basis our bodies are also processing through endotoxins (toxins or waste products produced within the body including: infections, bacteria shedding, excess hormones and other metabolites). This constant process of filtering of both foreign and natural substances can sometimes be overloaded or hindered. There are several options we can do to help clear the detox pathways and help rid our body of toxins and the changing of seasons is a perfect time to do so!

In a healthy body, detoxification should be a part of normal daily function. The organs that play an important role in detoxing are the liver, large intestine, skin, respiratory system, lymphatic system, kidneys and bladder.

The liver is the primary detoxifying organ and there are three phases of detoxification.

  • Phase I is filtering of the toxins and this needs adequate nutrients to complete this process. (see chart below) When you are deficient in these nutrients that can slow the transportation of toxins down.
  • Phase II the toxin is conjugated from fat soluble to water soluble substance to increase the solubility so it can be excreted.
  • Phase III is about eliminating the toxins by transporting the toxins out of the cells and getting it to the bile or urine.

This leads to why it is so important to have adequate bowel movements (best to have 2-3 per day) and to stay properly hydrated so you can urinate adequately. Being sure to drink purified water (at least half your body weight in ounces per day) can help with the elimination of toxins

DETOX PHASESMICRO NUTRIENTS
Phase IVitamin A, B2, B3, C, E, Folate, Iron, Calcium, Copper, Zinc, Magnesium, and Selenium
Phase IIB-vitamins in particular B6, Folate, and B12

What we eat and drink can help the detoxifying pathways. As mentioned above when you are deficient in certain nutrients this can hinder the detoxification process. Consuming a diet with adequate protein, high in fruits and vegetables, and healthy fats will provide the nutrients your body needs. In Phase II, glutathione helps to move toxins out of the cells.(1) Foods that are rich in sulfur containing amino acids help to increase the stores of glutathione.

These foods include:

  • Organic eggs
  • Avocadoes
  • Red onions
  • Cruciferous vegetables.
  • Additionally foods that are rich in chlorophyll also help the body to eliminate toxins more effectively. (2) These foods include cilantro, parsley, spinach, spirulina and chlorella. Chia, hemp and flax seeds are rich antioxidants and fiber help to neutralize toxins and safely remove it from the body. (2)

IFM states, “Limiting or eliminating certain foods to reduce the total intake of toxicants while consuming more fruits and vegetables rich in antioxidant and anti-inflammatory nutrients may support the liver and promote efficient biotransformation and elimination.” (3) It is important to provide the nutrients our body needs while also limiting or eliminating the foods that could be increasing the toxic load.

Even the timing of when we are eating can have an effect on detoxification. Intermittent fasting can be beneficial for the detox process. By allowing our body to rest from digestion from a minimum of 12 hours to a range of 16-18 hours (up to 24 hours), helps to remove toxins from our cells.

In addition to dietary changes there are several other methods you can use to detox even at home. Dry brushing is an easy at home detox method that aids in removing dead layers of skin and helps to open the pores. Our skin is the largest organ and one of the main properties is elimination of toxins through sweat. By opening the pores and removing dead skin cells you are able to sweat more efficiently. When we sweat better we are able to move more toxins out of our body at a quicker rate. Another method to increase sweating is using a sauna. There are two types of saunas: infrared or steam. Both types encourage sweating just by different heat sources. Exercise we know is good for our physical health but it is also beneficial for aiding in the detox process.

Additional methods for detoxing at home include detox baths, oil pulling, and castor oil packs. There are several options for detox baths including epsom salts, apple cider vinegar, and baking soda. Depending on what you are focusing on there are recipes for a bath to help remove toxins or even reduce minor pain from exercise. Oil pulling is an easy method you can add to your routine that includes swishing oil around in your mouth to help remove toxins. Castor Oil Packs and Coffee Enemas are additional options that can help eliminate different toxins from your body.

Though we have mainly talked about physical toxins there can also be mental toxins that can affect your mental or spiritual health. A toxic relationship or friendship, toxic social media posts, movies or tv shows that cause additional stress are all examples of mental toxins. Some examples of detoxing from these types of stressors include social media breaks, replacing tv shows/movies with reading books, listening to soothing music in the background,  enjoying an evening walk to decompress, seeing a Christian counselor to help work through those difficult relationships. Detoxing from the toxins on an emotional level can be just as important as helping the body remove the exotoxins.

Certain nutritional supplements can support your detoxification process.  If you were to do a cleanse 2x a year, it may be worth the extra expense to purchase the supplements!!  Here’s the types we recommend:

  • Liver Support Formula
  • Methylated B Vitamins
  • Omega 3’s with Glutathione + Curcumin
  • Toxin Binder
  • Bone Broth Powder
