Nutritionists talk NUTRIENTS: proteins, carbs, fats, vitamins, minerals…  Normal people 🙂 or everyone else talks FOOD: bread, fruit, meat…God talks BOTH.  In our food faith connection today, we’ll look at six words.  These six words are the TOP SIX most used FOOD WORDS in Scripture.  These top six mirror nutrition science and the six nutrients very clearly!

Anytime we study a topic in Scripture we want to make sure we let the Scripture speak for itself.  One way to do this is to literally look up the word or words we are interested in studying.  See where and how they are used to gain the full context.  For example, the word MERCY is found over 225 times in the Old Testament, and only 60 times in the New Testament.  This is significant because MERCY means: NOT giving us something we DO deserve.  That’s God COVERING our sin.  That’s the old testament law and sacrificial system.   But GRACE is found 131 times in the New Testament and only 39 times in the Old Testament.  This is significant because GRACE means:  GIVING us something we DON’T deserve. That’s God CONQUERING our sin.   That’s the power of the gospel and the person and work of Jesus accomplished.

Back to food.  When we look up food words in Scripture these six stand out far above the rest. There is a clear distinction in the Top Six as compared to other food words like honey, fish, leeks, garlic… these are also foods mentioned in the Bible, but nowhere near the number of times these TOP SIX are mentioned.  What exactly is the message of food in the Bible?

It’s one of REVELATION…

What nutrient dense whole foods provide for us physically, God through Christ provides for us spiritually.  Food gives us a framework to know God!  Nutrition science lines up with these most used food words that mirror who Jesus is!

The Natural Reveals the Spiritual…

These six nutrients and food words used in Scripture highlight who God is and what His purposes are for our physical and spiritual nourishment.  The natural reveals the spiritual.  Nutrition science is part of that revelation.  In the next several Food Faith Friday posts each of these will be highlighted individually linking the physical and spiritual connections and significance.  But for now…
